THE USE OF COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES IN JOB INTERVIEW

Steffie Mega Mahardhika

Abstract

Interviewee‘s communication strategies are potential to influence the success of a job interview. However, this relationship between these two phenomena remains relatively under explored in the theoretical territory (e.g. Jiang, 2013; Engstrand, 2011; Cruisckshank, 2012). This paper is intended to contribute to this area of inquiry by employing critical discourse analysis in investigating the construction and negotiation of the answers to the job interview. Findings and discussion reveal that interviewees‘ communicative skills are not less important than information regarding candidate‘s employable skills and work experience. There is a need to take a linguistic turn to linguistically evidence how interpersonal and pragmatic meaning function in job interview conversation. Creating structural relations among utterances by employing interpersonal, logico-semantic and channelling strategies is mandatory.
