INTERACTIVE ONLINE APPS FOR ENGLISH CLASSROOM: A SURVEY OF ENGLISH TEACHERS‟ COMMENTS IN THE IMOOC PROGRAM

Abstract


Using interactive online applications in English classrooms is a new paradigmn of language teaching in Indonesia. This activity is one example of IT-based language teaching approach popularized and implemented by many experts of education and teachers around the world. This research was aimed to introduced Interactive Online Apps (IOA) like Quizlet, Padlet, Canva, Grammarly, Answer the Public.com, Evernote, Scrapbook, and Socrative to English teachers in Indonesia. To see comments and dig up information of the IOA implementation, the researher used a quantitative and qualitative survey design. The participants were 21 English teachers from some schools in Central Java, Indonesia. This survey used the data from the participants taking part in the Indonesian Massive Open Online Course (IMOOC) program 2017. The IMOOC is an online course that facilitates English teachers in Indonesia to have the IT-based teaching knowledge autonomously, improve their teaching skills, and upgrade their teaching teaching competence. Based on the survey, it was found that intensity and frequency usage of IOA implemented by English teachers are Quizlet (47.1%), Canva (29.4%), Grammarly (17.6%), and Scrapbook (5.9%). It can be concluded that Canva is a favourite IOA used by English teachers to teach, for example, short functional texts and based on this survey this IOA is really an interesting app for students to use and manage.
