Abstract

This study is mainly aimed at analyzing cohesive devices in both textbooks of ELT, finding out teachers‘ attitudes towards cohesion teaching. Adapting the discourse analysis framework, in general, and Michael McCarthy (2000) critical text analysis, in particular, the current study aims at examining 3 aspects of grammatical cohesion, namely reference, ellipsis and substitution, and conjunction in the conversation as well as vocabulary and grammar parts of ―Cara Cepat Berbahasa Inggris Dalam 22 Hari”. Four unit were chosen as core materials for the analysis of the cohesive devices. After analyzing the textbooks and conducting the grammatical cohesion analysis, the researcher has achieved satisfactory results and make an evaluation. Firstly, the statistic shows that there are four dominant devices that are most frequently used cohesive devices in the textbooks are Anaphoric Reference (46,15 %), Substitution (85,71 %) and Adversative Conjunction (71,42 %). These devices accounts for highest frequency of occurrence in the textbook which have great influence on the cohesion of the text. Referred from this statistics, it‘s important for the teachers to teach students how to link grammatical items with anaphoric reference in reading texts. Based on the findings, significant suggestions were provided for future applications in learning and teaching cohesion. It is hoped that the results of this research would be of some use for further study in the field.
