THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS‟ MOTIVATION AND COMMUNICATION APPREHENSION IN SPOKEN COMMUNICATION ACTIVITY – A CASE OF MARITIME SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract


This paper reports on the correlation between students‘ motivation and level of communication apprehension in relation to spoken communication acitivity. This study attempted to explore whether or not the existence of relationsip between motivation and communication apprehension happen to students‘ performance. This study involved 40 second grade students of a maritime high school in Semarang. Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA) and motivation level questionnaires were applied to measure the level of students‘ motivation and communication apprehension in learning and communicating in English. The speech performance scores were obtained through teacher and peer grading. The result indicated that students‘ motivation and communication apprehension showed significant correlation to students‘ performance in spoken communication acitivity.
