DESIGNING PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT OF SPEAKING SKILL FOR VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract


Portfolio assessment can be a bridge from formative assessment to summative assessment that helps students in gaining not only good mark but also skill. To do so, in designing a good portfolio, it should have entries that help students in mastering the material. The study aimed at designing portfolio assessment of speaking skill for Vocational High School Students. It used Research and Development design proposed by Borg and Gall (2003) which consisted of research and information collecting (the study of literature, document analysis and need analysis), planning, developing the form of product, field testing, and product revision. The participants of this study are eleventh grader of vocational high school students. It resulted entries that appropriate with syllabus material for the students based on the validation from English practitioners. Then after this portfolio assessment applied, the finding showed that students got the beneficial effect not only for their speaking skill but also their academic achievement. The study recommends that teachers, especially who want to apply portfolio assessment in their teaching and learning process follow the set of entries in order to guide well the students to improve their skill as well as academic achievement.
